Abstract: Fractional Fourier transform (FrFT), as a generalized form of Fourier transform, has shown a great potential to be used in the field of optics. The quadratic phase factor in FrFT integral kernel is the key to be utilized as a theoretical base in various areas. From near-field (Fresnel) diffraction analysis to biomedical image reconstruction and signal processing. Chirp functions that are defined to have frequency-varying quadratic phase factor, could be considered as an excellent candidate in studying the transformation. These functions have the ability to be transformed into delta functions where through this property numerous applications are expected, especially in optics. An actual optical setup performing FrFT will be discussed along with some other optical concepts in the fractional domain. Additionally, a future look into the practical applications and ideas of the FrFT will be given. Finally, I will, briefly, go over an all-optical bistable switch design as my recent research. This novel design uses a common single active element (SOA) with two separate paths to operate as a bistable device. This device promises a fast switching characteristic that can be incorporated in larger all-optical photonic analog to digital converters (ADC).

Biography: Hossein Sarafraz received his PhD. in Electrical & Computer Engineering (minor in Photonics) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU).
