Positioning support is a service available for all previous generations of cellular networks. Until recently, the main motivation for standardizing this feature was to fulfill US regulatory requirements for emergency call positioning, however by the presence of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and moving towards 5th generation of cellular networks, there are more use-cases which require an accurate position estimation. Positioning methods based on radio access technology can be as simple as serving cell identity or more accurate by multilateration computation for time of arrival estimation of several signals. The IoT use-cases mainly require low-power consumption and the possibility to communicate in the most challenging locations in terms of coverage. The limitation of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) in providing indoor positioning is one of the reasons for the importance of enhancing the positioning methods in cellular networks. The seminar would cover all the latest news on the topic of positioning in 3GPP standardization.
